Kirkland Veterinary Surgery

Surgery Options for Minimal Pain and Maximal Recovery

Dr. Velu and the entire staff at Finn Hill Animal Hospital understand that the decision to allow your special companion to undergo surgery is never an easy one. We strive to ensure your pet's procedure is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Our Approach to Your Kirkland Pet's Surgery

Perhaps the most important pre-surgical step is to discuss why we believe a particular procedure is necessary and what it entails. Our veterinary team will provide you with information on proper postoperative care and answer any questions you may have so that you feel comfortable knowing you are making the right choice for your pet.We regularly perform many types of surgeries, including (but not limited to):

Common Surgeries

  • Spay and Neuter for Dogs & Cats
  • Dental Cleanings & Procedures
  • Eye Surgery
  • Bladder surgery
  • Tumor removal
  • Gastrointestinal surgeries
  • Orthopedic surgeries
  • Cancer surgeries
  • Skin surgery
  • Thyroid surgery

Ensuring the health and safety of your pet during surgery is our utmost concern and requires an anesthetic and monitoring regimen that adheres to the highest principles and ideals of quality care. We utilize a multi-parameter monitoring and anesthesia system to ensure your pet's safety during all surgeries.

Prior to surgery, your pet receives a thorough exam by the veterinary surgeon and presurgical blood tests are performed. The results of these tests and your pet's past anesthetic history, breed, preexisting conditions, and age are used to create an individualized anesthesia protocol for your pet. During surgery, your pet is care for by a well-trained and experienced veterinary technician using our monitoring system which tracks blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, and oxygen level. We monitor body temperature carefully using special circulating water blankets.

Pain Management

We all know that pain hurts, but pain also has many other detrimental effects on your pet's body. Pain slows healing, decreases activity, and causes behavioral changes (such as aggression, anxiety, and depression). Pain worsens diseases like arthritis and potentially some cancers. It interferes with the bond between you and your pet.

At Finn Hill Animal Hospital, we practice the most up-to-date pain management protocol. For acute and chronic conditions, we use all our available and safe resources, including NSAIDs (non-steroidal medications) and oral and injectable analgesics for the complete comfort of your pet.

Postoperative Care

As your pet is being discharged from the hospital, you will be provided with detailed information on how to properly care for your pet at home after surgery. We are also happy to answer any questions or concerns that may arise once you get your pet home.

Orthopedic Surgery

Surgical Expertise for Kirkland, Bothell and Kenmore Pets

If you’re in Kirkland, Bothell or Kenmore and your pet is suffering from a musculoskeletal injury or degenerative condition, you may be feeling much of the same anguish as your beloved companion. The good news is that orthopedic surgery can often produce dramatic improvement to help injuries heal properly and relieve the symptoms caused by painful conditions such as hip dysplasia. Here at Finn Hill Animal Hospital, we're delighted to offer a variety or orthopedic procedures for pets that need it.

A dog or cat's musculoskeletal anatomy may differ from yours in many respects, but it can be prone to many of the same ailments. Fractured bones, for instance, frequently occur as the result of an impact with an automobile or a traumatic fall -- and in many cases, the bones must be set surgically. Osteoarthritis tends to appear with age, and this form of joint degeneration can cause chronic pain, stiffness and loss of mobility as the joints rub together without proper cushioning.

Some musculoskeletal conditions are associated with particular types or sizes of animals. Hip dysplasia, for instance, is a progressive failure of the femoral joint that afflicts some breeds of dog (such as German Shepherds and other large breeds) more than others. The anatomy of a dog's leg and foot can also make some animals more vulnerable to a ruptured ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament (the ligament that controls normal range of motion in the knee joint).

Trust Our Veterinarian for Orthopedic Surgery

Under the leadership of our Kirkland veterinarian, Dr. Velu, our experienced team at Finn Hill Animal Hospital can provide whatever orthopedic surgical techniques your pet may need. Emergency treatment for acute injuries may include the insertion of metal hardware to pin broken bones together. A torn ACL should be treated immediately as well. There are several surgical techniques that can address this kind of repair. For instance, we may recommend a TPLO (tibial plateau leveling osteotomy) or a TTA (tibial tuberosity advancement). Both of these operations alter the structure of the knee joint slightly so that it can function well without the extra support of a working ACL. Some pets may do well with an alternative approach in which we use sutures to fashion an artificial replacement for the ACL.

Chronic degenerative conditions can also respond to orthopedic surgery. If your pet is crippled by hip dysplasia, and pain relievers are no longer helpful, we can replace the degenerated femoral head/neck or even perform a total hip replacement surgery if need be. We may also recommend surgery on other arthritic or damaged joints, with options ranging from loose cartilage removal to joint fusion or artificial joint implantation. Once the surgery is complete, we will advise you on proper home care and devise a rehabilitation program to help your pet heal as fully and safely as possible.
