Holistic, also called integrative or complementary, veterinary medicine is the examination and diagnosis of an animal that considers all aspects of the animal's life, and employs all of the practitioner's senses. Treatment is generally a combination of complementary, conventional and alternative modalities.

At Finn Hill Animal Hospital, we want to learn about your pet's behaviors, complete medical and dietary history, and environment, including emotional stresses and other factors. A thorough understanding of your pet's health will help our veterinary team make recommendations and provide you with the appropriate treatment options for improving their health. The techniques used in holistic medicine are gentle, minimally-invasive, and incorporate patient well-being and stress reduction.

Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points on the body that have the ability to alter various biochemical and physiologic conditions and help the body heal itself. Used successfully for nearly 4,000 years on animals and human beings, it is one of a variety of therapies that Finn Hill Animal Hospital offers to support your pet's wellness. Acupuncture is one of the safest therapies available and side effects, if any, are usually minimal.

Treatments may last anywhere from 10 seconds to 30 minutes depending on the condition and the method used. Acupuncture appointments may be as often as one to three times a week, but we typically see patients once weekly for four to six weeks. After the initial treatment period, the intervals between pet acupuncture visits are then extended based upon your pet's response. Some pets are seen once every two to six months for maintenance therapy, while others no longer need acupuncture once their condition has resolved.

Conditions that can be treated with veterinary acupuncture include:

  • Arthritis (hips, shoulders, elbows, back)
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Seizure disorders
  • Soft tissue injuries such as sprains, muscle strains, and neck pain
  • Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS or "dry eye")
  • Lick granulomas
  • Neurologic conditions
  • Pain and nausea related to cancer
  • Chronic digestive disorders (IBD, diarrhea, constipation)
  • Spinal cord disorders
  • Immune-mediated diseases and chronic liver or kidney diseases

A comprehensive pet health examination is completed prior to initiating acupuncture treatment for all pets. It is also important for you to let us know about any physical changes that occur in your pet's health during and after treatments.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic is a neurologically-based, holistic approach to animal health care and an alternative healing technique we embrace at our animal hospital. Our specially-trained veterinarians correct misaligned joints with specific, controlled thrusts by hand aimed at a particular joint. Improperly moving joints not only causes pain and stiffness locally, but also interferes with the functioning of the brain and the rest of the nervous system.

Chiropractic is beneficial for many conditions that befall our pets. Elderly, arthritic animals can experience relief, as do pets suffering from neck, back, and leg pain, muscle spasms, nerve problems, injuries, jaw misalignments, bowel and bladder incontinence, constipation, and disc disease. Chiropractic is also important in the maintenance of health and is recommended for puppies to provide them with a healthy start in life.

We treat our animal patients while they are relaxed and cooperative. Most pets enjoy their treatments, and some even fall asleep during the care.

Veterinary Homeopathy

Homeopathy is another holistic discipline that has a wide range of use in veterinary medicine. Our veterinarians at Finn Hill Animal Hospital offer veterinary homeopathy because they find it to be a gentle, safe, and effective medical system that offers a true cure to many pets.

Homeopathy is based on the principle that "like cures like." It means that any substance that can produce symptoms in a healthy animal can cure similar symptoms in a animal who is sick. This idea is referred to as the "Law of Similars," and was explored by Aristotle and Hippocrates and mentioned in ancient Hindu manuscripts. It was a physician named Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, however, who turned it into a science of healing over 200 years ago.

Ayurveda or Ayurvedic Veterinary Medicine

Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine is a Hindu system of traditional medicine native to India and a form of alternative medicine. Ayurvedic herbs and techniques have been in use for thousands of years with safety and efficiency proving its track record. This alternative approach to health and healing is widely used for prevention and treatment of chronic ailments like digestive issues and musculoskeletal issues in animals.
